Remembering Dolly Parton: A Sevier County Legacy of Kindness, Imagination, and Hope

From our office in Sevierville, we remember her Smoky Mountain roots, her kindness, her music, and the literacy legacy she leaves to children around the world.
Cyber One Solutions joins our neighbors in Sevier County and across East Tennessee in mourning Dolly Parton, who died peacefully in Nashville on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, after a brief battle with cancer. Our company is fortunate to keep an office in Sevierville, in the county where she was born and raised, and this week the loss feels close to home. We did not know her personally. Like most of our neighbors, we knew her the way the world did: through her music, her generosity, and the warmth she carried into every room. That was more than enough to make this feel like losing family.
A Daughter of Sevier County
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, one of twelve children raised in a small cabin in the Smoky Mountains of Sevier County. The family had little money and no shortage of work, and the mountains shaped everything that followed: the faith, the humor, the songs, and a work ethic that never left her. She moved to Nashville right after graduating from Sevier County High School, and no matter how far her career carried her, she never really left these hills. The mountains stayed in her voice, and she kept coming back to them.
The Music
Her songwriting turned a hard childhood into some of American music's most enduring stories. Coat of Many Colors made a patchwork coat stitched by her mother into a lesson about love and dignity. Jolene and I Will Always Love You became standards recorded around the world, and 9 to 5 gave working people an anthem that still plays anywhere work gets done. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and, in 2022, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a late reminder that her songs never belonged to just one genre or one generation.
Kindness That Stayed Home
Plenty of stars leave home and send money back. Dolly Parton built things here. Dollywood, opened in Pigeon Forge in 1986, grew into one of Sevier County's economic anchors and has brought work and visitors to the county for four decades. When wildfires devastated Gatlinburg and the surrounding communities in 2016, her My People Fund put monthly support directly into the hands of local families who had lost their homes. During the pandemic, her gift to Vanderbilt University Medical Center helped fund research behind one of the first COVID-19 vaccines. She gave quietly, she gave constantly, and she gave first to the people of these mountains.
In the statement announcing her passing, Dollywood Parks & Resorts wrote: "With heavy hearts, the Dollywood family mourns the passing of our beloved Dreamer-in-Chief, Dolly Parton." True to her wishes, the park stayed open, carrying her message that the show must go on.
A Library for the World's Children
Few things she built meant more to her, or to this county, than Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, the literacy program she founded in Sevier County in 1995 in honor of her father, who never had the chance to learn to read. It mails a free book every month to enrolled children from birth to age five, and it has grown from one Tennessee county into a program serving children across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland, gifting more than 200 million books along the way. Generations of children, including many in the communities we serve, learned to love reading because of her.

To her family, her friends, the Dollywood hosts, and every neighbor in Sevier County and beyond who feels this loss, Cyber One Solutions offers our deepest condolences. East Tennessee did not just lose its most famous daughter. It lost its finest example of what one person raised in these mountains can mean to the whole world.
